Distributed ledger technologies enable the coordination of people without a central authority. And while this technology has cultivated a mass of new ideas across many domains, we continue to believe that the most salient opportunity presented is that of disintermediating the issuance and regulation of money. 

This belief has led us to think extensively about what qualities an independent money should have, and what problems an independent money can solve that a sovereign money cannot. 

And we have concluded that the single greatest advantage of independent money is its ability to remain solely focused on the responsible regulation of supply—such that purchasing power remains undiminished by cycles of inflation. 

There is a very real possibility that a digital asset can make obsolete the problem of nonuniform inflation; and a solution to this problem would decouple us from the conflict between national and international interests that has been so troublesome for sovereign monies and the global economy to date. 

Many stablecoin projects today are recreating fiat on distributed ledgers, and we think this is worthwhile because it opens up the free trade of money—lifting the floor of quality to that of the best fiat money. 

However the true potential of independent money lies not in lifting the floor, but in lifting the ceiling of money quality. For this reason, we have chosen instead to address this much older, bigger problem of inflation and its connection to national policy. 

The Bitcoin protocol has made enormous strides in this direction, but its fixed supply policy limits functionality to that of a digital gold. Our mission is to produce a money that is both sound, like gold; and stable, like fiat. For the first time ever, this is possible.

DefiDollar is an attempt at being an index of stable coins that uses Defi primitives to stay near the dollar mark and subsidize the collateralization ratio.

Since DefiDollar (DUSD) is backed by existing stable coins, for the sake of the illustration, we start with choosing two stable coins, A and B for e.g. Dai and sUSD as the underlying reserves, in an equal ratio.

To mint 200 DUSD, the user deposits 100 coins each of A and B.

Within the mint transaction, A and B are locked in Aave, and the corresponding interest-bearing Aave coins aA and aB are deposited in a liquidity (balancer) pool. Interest income from Aave is redirected to an earnings pool.

aA and aB in the pool can be traded using an Automated Market Maker mechanism (a pool-based swap mechanism used by Uniswap and curve.fi and for which balancer provides a framework).

DefiDollar

Angle will be the first decentralized, capital efficient and over-collateralized stablecoin protocol. It could be used to issue any type of stablecoins. It will start by creating the first liquid Euro stablecoin on-chain.

Angle aims to open a new era in DeFi. So far, most DeFi and stablecoin solutions have been Dollar centered. This has many undesirable effects for people which home currency is not the Dollar. In 2020 for example, people from Europe would have needed to make at least a 10% return on their stable USD to make a profit in Euro.

Angle’s goal is to provide open access to financial products for people all around the world. We will thus start by launching the first reliable and liquid stable Euro (agEUR) on Ethereum.

The plan is then to launch a USD stablecoin and to offer fiat stablecoins for other regions heavily involved in DeFi but underserved in terms of stablecoins, including for instance the Swiss Franc, the British Pound, the Japanese Yen or the Korean Won. Angle will also create stable assets pegged to non-fiat underlying like indexes or baskets of currencies.

To make DeFi more inclusive and democratize stablecoins not necessarily pegged to the USD, the Angle Core Team has developed a cutting-edge derivatives-backed and over-collateralized stablecoin protocol.

The protocol will enable users to trustlessly swap a wide range of collateral types against stablecoins and conversely at oracle value thus making it easy for arbitrageurs to bring the price back to peg.

Besides being a highly capital-efficient stablecoin protocol, Angle Protocol will allow anyone to open leverage long positions with no funding rate on collateral/stablecoin pairs or to get yield by depositing collateral. There will be a multiplier effect at stake for these liquidity providers: the protocol can guarantee them higher yield than what common lending protocols like Compound or Aave offer.
