A specific application of our service is for the blockchain context - a reliable connection between smart contracts and the Internet. Our service is platform-agnostic and provides access to all the major smart-contracts capable platforms out there (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Rootstock, Eris and private networks). As a company, we think that the auditability of the off-chain part is as important as the auditability of the on-chain one, which is provided by the blockchain by design. Our approach aims to reduce the amount of trust involved by providing data in a blockchain-ish way.

In this document, we outline the design for a Lightning Service Authentication Token (LSAT) for future services created by Lightning Labs. This specification is open source, with contributions accepted at our LSAT specification repository.  LSATs are a new standard protocol for authentication and paid APIs developed by Lightning Labs. LSATs can serve both as authentication, as well as a payment mechanism (one can view it as a ticket) for paid APIs. In order to obtain a token, we require the user to pay us over Lightning in order to obtain a pre-image, which itself is a cryptographic component of the final LSAT token.

The implementation of the authentication token is chosen to be macaroons, as they allow us to package attributes and capabilities along with the token. This system allows us to automate pricing on the fly and allows for a number of novel constructs such as automated tier upgrades. In another light, this can be viewed as a global HTTP 402 reverse proxy at the load balancing level for all our services.

Proof of History: The Key to Speed. Similar to Google’s TrueTime, which relies on synchronized atomic clocks for a trusted source of time and ordering, Solana has created a cryptographically secure and trustless time source--and built a blockchain around it. We call it Proof of History.

By weaving this standardized timestamp into the blockchain, nodes in the network can verify the time and order of events without witnessing them directly. This drastically reduces messaging overhead and is one example of the many optimization capabilities that become available through Solana’s Proof of History.
