COPA, The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance, operates on the principle that open access to patents covering foundational cryptocurrency technologies is necessary for the community to grow, freely innovate, and build new and better products.

It is a non-profit community of like-minded people and companies formed to encourage the adoption and advancement of cryptocurrency technologies and to remove patents as a barrier to growth and innovation. COPA acknowledges that cryptocurrency technology is built on the collaborative efforts of a community made up of developers, engineers, and designers. The success of cryptocurrency is a direct result of the community coming together to build and develop upon existing technologies for the benefit of all, and we believe COPA will help this happen.

Crypto organizations have filed for hundreds of patents on cryptocurrency technology and continue to do so in large numbers, causing some concerns:

1/ Locking up foundational cryptocurrency technologies in patents stifles innovation and the adoption of these technologies in new and improved applications.

2/ While patents are useful defensively and can serve as a lawsuit deterrent, misguided and offensive use of patents by bad actors threatens the growth and free availability of cryptocurrency technologies. Many crypto companies do not own patents and are unable to adequately deter or defend against these bad actors.

Circle is a peer-to-peer payments technology company. It was founded by Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville in October 2013. Circle's mobile payment platform, Circle Pay, allows users to hold, send, and receive traditional fiat currencies. In September 2015, Circle received the first BitLicense issued from the New York State Department of Financial Services. In April 2016, the British government approved the first virtual currency licensure to Circle. Circle is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.

Up until December 2016, Circle Pay also operated as a Bitcoin wallet service to buy and sell Bitcoins. It has since ceased to provide such service, claiming the company "is now more than ever not a consumer bitcoin exchange, and will continue to focus resources on global social payments and future next-generation blockchain technology".

In February 2020, Circle sold its digital asset trading platform to Voyager Digital.

The empowerment of users: entrepreneurs have long been democratising technology; that, in turn is democratising capabilities, empowering users and organisations to do things they couldn’t before, or do them a lot better, cheaper and faster. Over time these enabling technologies can evolve into meaningful platforms and / or networks. Even though a lot of empowerment has happened through desktop and mobile internet, we think we are just getting started.

The liberation of data: entrepreneurs can make data more free, usable, portable and positively influence the balance of power over data. We think a lot of interesting things will happen at the intersection of control, value and meaning from data for both individuals and organisations.

So we are trying not to think of the world too much in terms of specific sectors — but rather what the macro level economic and social changes are that technology is driving. There are a few other things we are excited about and we’ll make sure to keep an open mind. And of course we are most excited about the opportunity to work with entrepreneurs every day. This is why we get out of bed in the morning and don’t mind chewing through a topic on 2am on a Saturday morning.
